A few words about THIRA (SANTORINI)…. The island in 5 pieces !
Santorini, also known as Thira, is widely considered to be Greece’s most spectacular island !!!The striking landscape, the peculiarities of the natural environment, the unusual architecture and the outstanding monuments of Santorini attract very large numbers of visitors .THIRA consists of 3 islands : the main island, Santorini, which has the shape of a crescent moon, the smaller island of Thirassia, situated exactly opposite, the islet of Aspronissi with its visible pumice stone ground and rabbits as inhabitants. These three main islands are linked together after all the volcanic activity by two smaller islets, Palea Kameni (Hot Springs) and Nea Kameni (Volcano). The landscape on the western side of the island is formed by towering cliffs that plunge straight into the depths of the sea, crowned by tiny and blindingly white houses. The steep coastline of the west is countered by the vast beaches of the east side, some of them sandy and others with pebbles. When it was “whole” there is a strong possibility that Thira was actually Atlantis…
A few words about FIRA town
The Capital of the Island ! Fira is the largest town of the island and it clings to the edge of the cliff !The architecture is a jumble of Cycladic and Venetian style; structures side by side, in a stark whiteness !Wandering through the cobbled streets of Fira, one gets the feeling of the old-world charm blended in with the modern day comforts; the narrow little passages are filled with little stores, restaurants, traditional taverns, discotheques and bars where the music plays into the dawn.
A few words about OIA (Ia),
known for its magical sunsets ! The name Oia is actually pronounced ‘ia’ instead of ‘o-i-a’ ! This traditional settlement is located on the northern tip of the island, high on the cliff-top, and its architecture is typical Santorinian; houses with whitewashed walls and blue domes !Ia is most famous for its unique sunset and every day it is filled with people from all over the world gathered together at the tip of the village to witness the fantastic colours !
A few words about VOLCANO !
The island itself owes its very existence to the volcano !The present-day crescent shape of the island is a consequence of its activity in prehistoric times. The last huge eruption of the volcano dates back 3.600 years, in the late Bronze Age. The mild activity of the volcano after this major eruption continues into the present (the most recent eruption occurred in 1950) building up two small islands within the caldera, Palea Kameni (Hot Springs) and Nea Kameni (Volcano).
